Gmail Notifier (PC) and Google Notifier (Mac)

About the Gmail Notifier (PC) and Google Notifier (Mac)

If you have Google Chrome, try using Desktop notifications instead of Notifier.
Gmail Notifier (for PC users):
The Gmail Notifier is a downloadable application that alerts you whenever you have new Gmail messages. After you download the Notifier, an icon will appear in your system tray (so you don't have to open a browser) to let you know if you have unread Gmail messages. Once you install the Notifier, you'll be able to:
  • Automatically check for new messages every two minutes.
  • See a snippet of text from up to 30 unread messages.
  • Select a sound to indicate when you have new mail.
  • Make Gmail your default email application.
To use the Gmail Notifier, you need Windows 2000, Windows XP, or a more recent version of Windows. (Download the Notifier*) The Notifier is not compatible with Windows ME at this time, but we look forward to offering support for more operating systems in the future.
The Notifier is currently available in English only.
If you have an idea for improving the Notifier, please click the 'Contact Us' link in the Gmail Help Center and send us your idea using the suggestions form. But before you do, please check out some of the things we're already working on.

*Note: If you've enabled the 'Always use https' setting in Gmail, you'll need to install a patch for the Notifier to work with this setting:
  1. Download the patch (.zip).
  2. Open the folder.
  3. Double-click the notifier_https.reg file.
  4. Click yes when you're asked to confirm if you want to add the information to the registry.
  5. Restart the Notifier.
If you decide you no longer want to use the https setting, you'll need to install the other file included in the download to reset the Notifier. Use the same method as above, except with 'notifier_https_undo.reg.'
Google Notifier (for Mac users):
Google Notifier is a program for the Mac that lets you know whenever you receive a new Gmail message or have an upcoming event on Google Calendar. When a Gmail message arrives, or an event's time is near, you'll see a nifty translucent box on the screen that tells you about the message or the event. But wait -- there's more! With Google Notifier, you can:
  • See a list of your unread Gmail messages.
  • Make Gmail your default email program.
  • Quickly see upcoming events from your Google Calendar.
  • Create a new Google Calendar event.
Best of all, you don't have to open a web browser1 to use Notifier. When you install Notifier, you'll see a couple of new menu extras, icons on the right side of your menu bar. Click the Gmail icon to see the subjects of your recently received emails, or click the Calendar icon to see your upcoming appointments.
The Google Notifier requires OS X 10.3.8+ (including Tiger).

  1. browser: A browser is an application you can use to access the Internet and visit websites. Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari are all examples of browsers.
